When Will Google Actually Remove a Review? The Official Policy Decoded
Not every negative review qualifies for removal. We walk through every official Google policy that decides which reviews get taken down, and which stay forever.

Introduction
A lot of business owners burn time flagging reviews that Google will never remove. Knowing the official policies stops the disappointment and sharpens the flags that actually work. Need action on a specific review? See our practical removal guide.
The 7 categories of prohibited content
Google enforces seven official categories of content that are not allowed in reviews. A review falling into any of these is almost always removed after a flag.
- Spam and fake, bot reviews, paid reviews, repeated copy-paste text
- Conflicts of interest, reviews by owners, employees, ex-employees, competitors
- Off-topic, political statements, personal feuds, complaints about a different business
- Restricted content, alcohol, gambling, health claims, regulated financial products
- Illegal content, threats, incitement to violence, child safety violations
- Offensive and discriminatory, slurs, hate speech, sexually explicit language
- Personal information, names, phone numbers, medical data of third parties
The gray zone: what stays?
An honest negative experience stays online, even if the facts are disputed. Google won't take sides in a he-said / she-said. That's frustrating, but legally and operationally it's the only workable line. In these cases, reply professionally; future customers will read your reply.
Which evidence speeds removal?
The stronger your evidence, the faster Google acts. The three most powerful exhibits are a screenshot of the review, an extract from your customer records, and, for ex-employees or competitors, a LinkedIn link that confirms the conflict of interest.
