Why the Business Around the Corner Beats You on Google: What 21,373 Profiles Reveal
We compared 21,373 Google Business Profiles with their three strongest nearby competitors. The gap is smaller than most owners think, but it has two sides: rating and volume.

The short answer
The strongest businesses in your neighbourhood usually win on two things at once: a higher rating and more reviews. In our study, local leaders averaged 4.63 stars against 4.29 for the businesses they were compared with. The good news: the median gap to the weakest of your three leaders is just 52 reviews.
This article summarizes The Local Leader Gap 2026, original RecensioAI research on 78,234 Google Business Profiles in the United States and the Netherlands.
How we studied it
For 21,373 profiles we identified the three strongest comparable businesses nearby, in the same trade, ranked on rating weighted by review volume. That produced 46,096 comparison pairs. All data comes from public Google Business Profile fields.
One honest note: these are not Google's Maps positions. We do not measure ranking. We describe what the strongest businesses near you look like, so you know the bar you are measured against.
Three findings every owner should know
The numbers are clear and consistent across markets.
- 4.5 stars is the norm among leaders. 79.2% of local leaders rate 4.5 or higher, against 40.8% of other profiles. Only 8.8% of leaders sit below 4.3.
- The volume gap is dozens, not hundreds. The median business needs 52 more reviews to match the weakest of its three leaders.
- Volume alone is not enough. 72% of profiles rate lower than all three of their leaders. Closing the gap means protecting your rating as well as growing it.
How the gap differs by industry
Every trade has its own bar. Restaurants, cafés and bars show the biggest rating gap (4.05 versus 4.51). In salons and trades the bar is so high (leaders at 4.84 and 4.87) that tenths of a star decide who leads.
- Restaurants, cafés and bars: 4.05 vs 4.51 stars, median 170 vs 258 reviews
- Auto repair: 4.49 vs 4.76 stars, median 51 vs 84 reviews
- Hair and beauty salons: 4.69 vs 4.84 stars, median 35 vs 58 reviews
- Dentists: 4.21 vs 4.55 stars, median 45 vs 51 reviews
Your real competition sits within 3 km
The median distance between a business and its leaders was 2.7 km. Your competition is not the whole city. It is a handful of businesses in your own area, and that makes the race far more winnable than it looks.
