    What does Google say about incentives?

    Google is crystal clear about this: you may not offer incentives in exchange for reviews. This is explicitly stated in their content policy under 'misleading content'. Incentives include money, discounts, free products, gift cards, or other forms of compensation. It doesn't matter whether you ask for a positive or honest review. Any form of reward in exchange for a review is prohibited.

    The risks of incentivised reviews

    Violating Google's policy carries serious risks.

    • Reviews get removed: if a customer mentions receiving a reward in the review, Google removes it

    • Allowed: a general loyalty programme unrelated to reviews. Collecting points for purchases is fine, as long as it's not linked to posting a review
    • Allowed: making a QR code or review link available. Facilitating is not an incentive
    • Not allowed: 'Leave a review and get 10% off'. This is a direct linkage
    • Not allowed: 'Every reviewer enters a draw for a voucher'. Lotteries linked to reviews are also prohibited
    • Not allowed: a card saying 'Leave a review = free coffee on your next visit'

    Alternatives that work better

    The most effective way to get more reviews is not rewarding, but simplifying and asking at the right moment.
